How did Jesus instantly cure people?
As I was reading though Mark, I only got to the end of the first chapter before I questioned something that I haven’t thought twice about in my life. How was Jesus instantly curing these diseased people? “Moved with pity, he stretched out his hand and touched him and said to him, “I will; be clean.” And immediately the leprosy left him, and he was made clean (1:41-42).” I searched pictures of leprosy and I got a page full of deformed people covered with boils. How in the world did Jesus just tell this disease to go away and have these people cured that instant? I can understand more how he could heal those who were “demon-oppressed,” of course demons will have to listen when they are told by the son of God to leave the possession of a person. Leprosy was far from the only illness that Jesus cured. He cured the blind, cripple, and even raised people from the dead. If these stories had been left out of the Bible, people would not have known why so many people came to follow Jesus and a huge part of who he was would have been forgotten.
In the Bible, it is said that these people were healed with their faith in God. But this makes me question why these people were healed from their diseases and not people in this century who have the same belief in God. An article I found on http://intermetu.com found the answer in hypnosis. The author, Janet Decker, drew several parallels to Jesus’ healing and hypnosis including how he pulled them from the crowd, use of breathing techniques, and the tone of voice Jesus talked to them in. Setting someone in a private place, breathing with the other person, and modulation of the voice are the first three steps in performing hypnosis. It is hard to understand disease and the view of God in the way that people viewed these in biblical times. Their beliefs were far different from our modern Western ones. On atheism.about.com, they put the entire answer on faith using the example of the woman who touched Jesus’ robe and was healed. She touched his robe while he was going through a crowd. There must have been others who touched him in the crowd who also needed to be healed but were not. Meaning, this woman must have had more faith than the others for her disease to be healed. A third answer I found on wiki.answers.com stated that Jesus healed people simply on convincing they were healed. Jesus had several techniques in order to cure illnesses but none could work until the person had true faith and believed that Jesus had to power to cure them. Their faith couple with an action made by Jesus was enough to cure any disease. In a way, this answers my other question of how people are not healed now that have the same faith that people did in the biblical times. Jesus is no longer here on Earth to assist in curing people with diseases.
