Why did God choose Job to be considered by Satan?
Job began as a blessed man of God and by the end of his story, Job was still a man of God and was blessed again. He had seven children, many farm animals and many servants. But, why did God choose Job out of all the people on Earth to be considered and tormented by Satan? I chose this question because during the time that the sons of God met with the Lord, there was not mention of Job before God suggested him to Satan. God could have chosen anyone on Earth, but he wanted the test to fall on Job. The first sentence of Job describes him as “blameless and upright” and “one who feared God.” Job was not sinless, however, and because he was aware of his sins, he regularly made sacrifices to God. God looked down on Job as one of his servants and apparently thought of him highly enough to trust him to be tested. This is a story of how God chooses to test the faithfulness of his people. Even though God seemed to favor Job at first with all the blessing that he began with, God can choose to take away the same blessings that he has given a person. Job showed his knowledge that God could do this in Job 1:21, “The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.” Job’s statement shows the importance of this story in the Bible, that God need to know who can be tested and not turn away from him.
I believe that God chose to test Job because he knew that Job would not turn away from him. Satan was allowed by God to destroy Job, and even though Job went through a period of cursing his life and the day he was born, Job came out of this story with a deeper faithfulness in God. An article from my research, maranathalife.com, recognized that Job was probably not any more special than others during this time, but he was a person who was seeking God. The test that God put on Job was the time in his life to know God personally. As an article on sanctusvesania.com described the story, God was only using Satan to make sure that Job was righteous. God intended for Satan to destroy Job as a way to prove Job’s character. But, God could have chosen Job to be a lesson to Satan. An article on bible.org describes Satan’s belief that all men are like him. Satan believes that no man will serve God after torment and after their blessings from God are taken away. The story ends in the way God knew that it would, Job has not turned away from him as Satan expected him to do. Job could have been exactly the person for God to choose to teach Satan of righteous people. But, even though the lesson is plainly set in front of Satan, he is not able to change the way he thinks of people.
