David and Goliath Wilson Sporting Goods Commercial
In first Samuel chapter 17, there is a story of a young boy defeating a giant. The story of David and Goliath is one of the most widely recognized stories from the bible. Its popularity comes from being a story that many people can relate to. Everyone likes a victory for an underdog. That is what makes this story the makings for a good commercial. Since it is such an obvious allusion, anyone watching this commercial on television would immediately know what is going on. A Wilson Sporting Goods commercial from 1995 shows a short version of the story of David and Goliath advertising that their equipment is the best to use.
The commercial begins scanning over the army of giants while men and children are running away and an army of regular men approach them. The army of giants in this commercial is representing the Philistine army and the second represents the army of Israel. There is a man standing at the front of the Philistine army who is representing Goliath. In chapter 17 verse 24, the Bible tells of the mean fleeing from the Philistines when they see the biggest Philistine warrior, Goliath. The commercial shows all of the Philistines with their swords and shields held in front of them ready for battle. In the Bible, Goliath actually says “Am I a dog, that you come to me with sticks?...Come to me, and I will give your flesh to the birds of the air and to the beasts of the field.” David replied to Goliath, “You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.” The commercial skips over the conversation between David and Goliath only having Goliath state a challenge to the Israelite army. A small boy who is representing David walks through the crowd, up to Goliath, and slings his stone killing the giant. The boy walks to Goliath lying dead to pick up his stone. The stone shown in his hand has a W carved in the center and painted red. The words “the right equipment makes all the difference” come on the screen. The reference Wilson is making is to perform at your best, you must use the best equipment. This refers back to the statement said by David in the Bible, essentially saying that he had come to the battle with better equipment than Goliath.
