Mercedes Noah's Ark Commercial
The first chapter of the Bible contains some of the most popular and well-known tales out of the entire book. One of these is the story of Noah and his ark full of animals. This is a popular children’s tale that many people remember as adults. Because the story of Noah is so well-known throughout the population, it makes a good basis for a television commercial. The Mercedes commercial makes the allusion to Noah’s ark very clear and easily recognizable to anyone watching the commercial. The story begins in chapter six of Genesis telling of the events leading up to the flood and God telling Noah to build an ark. Chapter seven continues the story telling of God commanding Noah what to bring onto the ark. The eighth and ninth chapter tell the end of the story of God rescuing Noah and the covenant they made after Noah and his family were finally back on land.
The commercial begins by showing people loading an ark with two kinds of animals and objects at a time. This alludes to the task that Noah was given by God to load his ark with two of each kind of animal. The people loading this modern day ark are shown bringing tigers, giraffes, birds, zebras, elephants, penguins, horses, camels, and a long line of other animals two by two. But, these people are also shown bringing other items into the ark two by two. These things include paintings, music by Bach and Mozart, plants, statues, books, and musical instruments. The final items brought into the ark are two Mercedes cars. The idea behind showing these specific objects being taken onto the ark is to demonstrate that only the best of everything has a place on the ark. The viewer of the commercial is then asked, “If you were loading the ark today, what would you bring?” The doors to the ark are then closed as it begins to rain. The rain is showing that the flood is coming to destroy all things on the Earth, meaning that all the things that have been put on the ark were important enough to save from the flood. Obviously, the people loading this modern day ark have chosen to save two cars made by Mercedes and suggesting to the viewer they should make the same choice. The commercial is trying to convey to the viewer that if the choice had to made of the best car, a Mercedes car would be chosen over all of their competitors.
